The big money

Today I finally bit the bullet and forked out on some “proper” cycling clothing. This is becoming an expensive game! However, the very nice people at Larkfield Cycles agreed to give us a discount on any kit we need, as well as providing us with a lot of really sound advice. Thanks!

I couldn’t resist the urge to put it to the test so I shot off for a ride after lunch. I’d planned to do about 45 miles (down to Bewl Water, around it and back home again) but I missed a turning and it turned into 50. If I had any doubts about whether the money was well spent, they were quickly put to rest: the firmly-padded shorts reminded me of riding my old bike, which had suspension (suspension’s great but you go faster without it), and the thin jersey helped keep me cool. There was possibly also an element of psychological advantage – something along the lines of, “Now that I look like a proper cyclist, I’d better start peddling like one.”

I got home just in time to place the winning bid on a roof rack and bike carrier on eBay, for just under two thirds the price they price they sell at in the shops. All in all, a good day.
